International Photography Day

International Photography Day

On the 19th of August, International Photography Day will be celebrated. For this reason, in this week's publication we will talk about photography; its history, what it is and what it is for. Stay to find out everything!

What is photography?

The word “Photography” in Greek “photos” (photo) means “Light” and “graphos” (graph) “writing or drawing”. Photography is described as the representation of writing or drawing with light or, what is the same, the technique by which fixed and lasting images are obtained through the projection of light. This modern invention was harnessed by film and other technologies.

Where does photography come from?

It is said that the first successful experimental photographic attempt was around 1820. It involved images obtained with bitumen from Judea, which was spread over a silver plate. After a few days, you could get the picture. The procedure was called heliographic or heliogravure and was discovered by Joseph Niépce, a French chemist.

Niépce passed on his research to Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre, who invented the daguerreotype in 1838. The daguerreotype was the first procedure that had a development stage.

Over the years, the process of photography has changed and improved:

  • Hippolyte Bayard - discovered how to get positive images directly on paper.
  • William Henry Fox Talbot - developed the calotype.
  • Hippolyte Fizeau - made it possible for seconds of exposure to be enough for the daguerreotype and taking portraits became possible.
  • Gustave Le Gray - introduced the collodion.
  • George Eastman - introduced the first Kodak camera that used rolls of photographic film.

In this way, cameras began to be used by everyone, regardless of being professional photographers or not.

  • 1931 - the invention of the Flash.
  • 1948 - the spread of instant photography.
  • 1990 - the appearance of digital photography.

What is photography for?

After understanding what photography is and its creation and development process over time, many people will wonder what its importance is or what it can be useful for. The reasons are the followings:

  • Message; in each photograph, there is a different message.
  • Document; through photography, you can document histories, cultures...
  • Commercial; the clear objective of selling a product.
  • Art; images are taken through an object and the ideas behind the image are expressed. A personal view of photography.
