The dark side of Black Friday
As every Wednesday, Shibumi welcomes you to a new post on our blog. Last week one of the most anticipated sales of the entire year was held. But, is Black Friday really that positive for everyone? In this post we answer the question, do not miss it!
Black Friday
The “Black Friday” was originated in the United States and is celebrated after Thanksgiving. It all started in the 60s when a retail business wanted to increase its sales. From then until now, the tradition that is celebrated today arose. The expression "Black Friday" began to be used in Philadelphia, around 1961, when an official public bulletin warned of the disorder that was taking place in the streets due to said sales.
The fact that a business wants to have more sales is not negative. However, the consequences may not be so positive. We exemplify you!
Consequences
The consequences of Black Friday can be various, here are some of them.
Positives:
- The alleged saving of money by consumers.
- Companies can attract customers and retain them.
- Companies can release the stock they have left.
Negatives:
- Consumerism; you buy things you don't need.
- Small businesses cannot keep up with the big ones.
- It attracts the climatic crisis; it is not sustainable.
- It attracts the economic crisis; It's not profitable.
- Fraud discounts.
- It encourages exploitation and precarious temporary jobs.
- It encourages the sale of low-end products.
- Negative precedent for the rest of the year.
Black Friday can be positive if you have taken a look at a jacket and you wait for the price to drop so that it is cheaper for you. However, many people are overcome by the stress and anxiety of buying, especially since Christmas is so close, and they make massive and abusive purchases.
Shibumi does not support anything that has such negative consequences, especially for our planet, and condemns fast-fashion. What about you? What do you think about the issue? Let us know your opinion in the comments!
