International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste

Shibumi updates with a new publication on our blog one more week. This time we will talk about the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, a topic that worries about its serious consequences. The celebration of this day is on September 29 of each year. Do you find the topic interesting? Let’s read the entire publication!

What is celebrated?

Every September 29th, International Food Loss and Waste Awareness Day is celebrated. The day will require action from the public and private sectors to increase efforts to reduce food loss and waste and ensure food security for all.

Reducing food waste worldwide is essential because it can have certain benefits, such as providing more food to the most vulnerable or reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Food loss and waste must be reduced to promote sustainable food systems. For this reason, it is crucial to be aware of this global problem.

Why is its celebration important?

When food is lost or wasted, all the resources used to produce it are wasted, such as water, land, energy, labour and capital. Additionally, food lost or wasted in landfills generates greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.

Approximately one-third of the edible parts of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted, representing about 1.3 billion tonnes per year.

How can food waste be reduced?

Eliminating food waste is almost impossible right now and very difficult to achieve. However, there are ways to reduce it. We can all help save food. If this is your goal or you would like to help, here is a list of procedures that you can:

  1.  Adopt a more sustainable diet.
  2. Use the ripe fruit for juices, smoothies, etc.
  3. Store food sensibly: the recent ones behind and the oldest ones in front, to consume them before.
  4. Buy only what is needed.
  5. Start small: don't overorder at a restaurant or make too much food at home that isn't going to be food.
  6. Value leftovers: use what hasn't been eaten for another day or freeze.
  7. Support local food producers.
