The most ecological and interesting world records

Every third Wednesday in November, Guinness World Record Day is celebrated. Yesterday, November 16, 2022, the celebration of this long-awaited day for many people took place. In today's publication, we will see where this celebration comes from and which are the most curious records related to ecology. Let’s go for it!

The Story Behind Guinness World Records

To understand the origin of this initiative, we go back to 1950. At this time, the general manager of the Guinness distillery, Hugh Beaver, was hunting in the county of Wexford in England. One day, he wondered what type of bird would be the fastest and from there he commissioned a volume to be published with all types of records.

There are thousands of types of Guinness Records, but since Shibumi is aware of the environment, we want to make this section where we will talk about the most ecological and interesting records.

Starting with the Siembratón in Ecuador in 2015, where more than 640,000 plants were planted in about 2,000 hectares. An official of the Guinness Book verified the mark reached by the South American nation. It was not the first Guinness Record in Ecuador, since in 2013, thousands of students collected one million five hundred thousand plastic bottles in six days.

In 2019, a group of 633 divers broke the Guinness Record for the largest number of people gathered in one place to perform an underwater cleaning at the same time. This happened near a fishing pier in Deerfield Beach, in South Florida (United States). Although the total weight of all the trash collected had not been exactly calculated, it is estimated that the divers may have collected up to 1,400kg of debris. One of the people who were part of the group of divers was Dahlia Bolin, a 13-year-old diver. 

In addition, buildings or structures have also been created with previously used products. For example:

• A sculpture made up of 168,037 used plastic straws was built and made by Von Wong (from Canada) and Zero Waste Saigon (from Vietnam) in Vietnam on January 22, 2019.
• On December 14, 2019, a sculpture made of plastic bottles was created that reached 281 meters in height. Performed by Caroline Najib Chaptini.
